Stress Less: Techniques I Use to Find Calm in the Chaos

August 26, 20246 min read

As midlife women, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities—career, family, personal health, and everything in between. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, but I've learned that it's not about eliminating stress entirely; it's about finding ways to manage it effectively.

One of the biggest stressors I’ve encountered is the pressure to balance home and work life. Whether it’s meeting deadlines, managing my full client load, or simply trying to stay relevant in a fast-paced industry, the demands of a career can feel relentless. At the same time, family responsibilities don’t pause. There are aging parents, raising kids, & home tasks such as meal prep, bills to pay  and household chores to complete. The constant balancing act can leave us feeling stretched thin, with little time to focus on ourselves.

Then there's the personal health aspect. As we navigate the physical changes that come with aging, like menopause, it’s easy to feel disconnected from our bodies. The changes in energy levels, sleep patterns, and even mood can add another layer of stress. I used to think that prioritizing my health was a luxury, but I’ve realized it’s a necessity. Taking time for regular exercise, eating well, and practicing mindfulness has become essential in helping me manage stress.

And let's not forget about the emotional and mental toll. We’re often the glue that holds everything together, and that can be exhausting. The expectations we place on ourselves—or that others place on us—can lead to feelings of inadequacy or burnout. I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help, to set boundaries, and to carve out time for self-care. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being kind to ourselves.

Ultimately, stress is a part of life, especially in this stage. But by recognizing our stressors and finding strategies to cope—whether it’s through support systems, relaxation techniques, or simply giving ourselves grace—we can navigate midlife with more ease and resilience.

Here are some techniques I've incorporated into my life to reduce stress and maintain a sense of calm, even when life feels chaotic.

 1. Mindfulness Practices: Being Present in the Moment

One of the most impactful changes I've made is incorporating mindfulness into my daily routine. Mindfulness isn't just about meditation (though that's a great tool!); it's about being fully present in whatever you're doing. Whether I'm cooking, walking my Cavapoo puppy, or even working out, I try to focus entirely on the task at hand.

I started with just five minutes a day of deep breathing exercises, focusing on each inhale and exhale. Over time, this practice has become second nature, and I’ve noticed how it grounds me, reducing my anxiety and helping me feel more centered.

Tip: Start small. Even a minute of deep breathing or a quick mindful walk around your neighborhood can make a difference. Download my Guide to Mindfulness here

2. Organization Hacks: Declutter Your Space, Declutter Your Mind

A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. I've found that staying organized is key to reducing stress. I use simple organization hacks to keep my environment tidy, which in turn helps me feel more in control.

For example, I adopted the “one in, one out” rule—whenever I bring something new into my home, I make sure to get rid of something else. This prevents unnecessary accumulation and keeps my space (and mind) clear. I also love using planners and to-do lists to keep track of my tasks. Breaking down larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks makes them feel less overwhelming.

Tip: Take 10 minutes each evening to tidy up. You'll wake up feeling more organized and ready to tackle the day.

3. Setting Boundaries: Protect Your Time and Energy

One of the hardest but most rewarding lessons I've learned is how to set boundaries. As women, we often feel the need to say "yes" to everything—whether it's an extra project at work or a social commitment we're not excited about. But I've realized that saying "no" is essential for maintaining my well-being.

I’ve become more selective about where I invest my time and energy. By prioritizing activities and people that truly matter to me, I've found that I have more energy for the things I love, and less stress about the things that drain me.

Tip: Practice saying "no" without guilt. Your time and energy are valuable, and it’s okay to protect them.

4. Self-Care Rituals: Nourishing the Body and Soul

Self-care is non-negotiable for me, especially during stressful times. Whether it’s a skincare routine, a soothing bath, or a quick workout, taking time to care for myself helps me recharge and face challenges with renewed energy.

I’ve found that combining my self-care with something I enjoy, like listening to a podcast while taking a relaxing bath, or enjoying a cottage cheese parfait as a treat, makes it even more enjoyable and effective.

Tip: Find a self-care ritual that brings you joy and make it a regular part of your routine. It doesn't have to be elaborate—consistency is key.

 5. Prioritizing Sleep: The Foundation of Stress Management

Sleep is the foundation of everything for me. I've noticed that when I don't get enough rest, I'm more irritable, anxious, and less able to handle stress. I make sleep a priority by setting a regular bedtime, avoiding screens an hour before bed, and creating a calming bedtime routine.

I also focus on creating a sleep-friendly environment. For me, that means a cool, dark room, and a comfortable mattress and pillows. When I wake up feeling rested, I’m much better equipped to handle whatever the day throws my way.

Tip: Experiment with different bedtime routines until you find what works best for you. Quality sleep is worth the effort. You can download my 8 Tips for 8 Hours here

Conclusion: Embracing Calm Amidst the Chaos

Stress is inevitable, but how we respond to it makes all the difference. By incorporating mindfulness, organization, boundaries, self-care, and prioritizing sleep into my life, I’ve been able to find calm even in the midst of chaos. These strategies have improved not only my stress levels but also my overall well-being.

Remember, it’s not about perfection, but about finding what works for you and sticking with it. Embrace this stage of life with the knowledge that you have the tools to navigate it with grace and calm.
